Welcome to Year 1–2 B at Chapelfield Primary School
I am thrilled to welcome you to our Year 1–2 B class page! This year, your children will be supported by our dedicated and experienced team:

I have been teaching at Chapelfield for over 15 years with a mixture of experience in Y1, Y2, Y3, Y5 and Y6. I am excited to be working with Year 1 /2 this year and I hope my wealth of experience, enthusiasm, and a love of learning will be clear to see in the classroom. - Mrs Coundley – Teaching Assistant and PPA Cover
Mrs Coundley supports learning across the week and leads the class during PPA sessions on Wednesday afternoons. Her nurturing approach helps children feel confident and cared for. - Ms Macdonald – SSA.
Brief Curriculum Overview
In English, we begin the year with the story Mrs Mole, I’m Home! which will inspire our first writing unit. Children will develop their phonics skills through daily Read Write Inc sessions and enjoy a wide range of stories through our Fab Five reading programme.
In Maths, we start with Place Value, helping children understand numbers and their relationships. We also include Mastery of Number sessions to build fluency and confidence.
In Science, our topics are:
- Autumn: Everyday materials
- Spring: Seasonal Changes (Y1 content)
- Summer: Animals including Humans (Y2 content)
In Geography, our first unit explores Our Local Area – asking the question Why is our area special? and helping children connect with their community.
In PE, held every Monday afternoon in Autumn 1 as we are lucy to have a P.E. specialist coach doing Gymnastics. For the rest of the year, P.E. will be on a Friday afternoon – starting after half term (Week Beginning 2nd Nov 2026), we will be learning about being healthy and wellbeing.

A Typical Day in Year 1–2 B
- 08:40-09:00 – Children arrive and begin early work at their tables, choosing dinners and completing tasks in maths, handwriting, or spelling.
- 09:00-09:15 – Registration / Early work feedback
- 09:15-10:15 – Read Write Inc phonics followed by fab five story
- 10:15-10:30 – Handwriting
- 10:30-10:45 – Break
- 10:45-11:45 – Maths
- 11:45-12:00 – Two fab five stories.
- 12:00-13:15 – Lunch
- 13:15-13:30 – Afternoon registration and Mastery of Number
- 13:30-14:30 – Afternoon learning (English, Humanities, or PE)
- 14:30-14:45 – Afternoon break
- 14:45-15:15 – Assembly / humanities / myhappymind
- 15:15-15:25 – Fab five story – Celebrate Learning / Rewards – home time routine.

Learning at Home
We ask that children:
- Read at least three times a week at home and have their reading record signed. These are checked every Friday.
- Practise independent dressing skills, especially for PE days.
You can support your child by:
- Reading together regularly
- Talking about their day
- Encouraging independence with changing clothes – this is a big milestone in Year 1! Practise putting on socks!
Other Information
- If your child wants to bring a healthy snack for break time (fruit or yogurt only – no nuts, due to severe allergies in school)
